Probably the most important item you can buy for your pet is a pet id tag. Pets can be very curious which can cause them to wander off if they find an open door or gate. Pet id tags are a very affordable way to help ensure the safety of your pet if it were to become lost. Many people are good hearted enough to help a stray animal and if it has a pet id tag they can easily and quickly contact you to return your best friend. Pet tags that we sell are either a brass pet id tag, a plastic pet id tag or an aluminum pet id tag. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be engraved with any information you would like to include on the tag. See our pet id tag order form below to the different custom pet tag options.

Recommended information to include on your id tag:
  • The name of your dog or cat.
  • One or two phone numbers where you or a good friend or relative can be reached 24 x 7.
  • Your street address and city so they can return the pet to you if it is just around the block (you don't need to include your zip code as they will not be mailing your pet back to you).
  • Many municipalities require that you license your pet and the license number can be engraved onto the pet id tag so your pet will only need to wear one id tag.
As far a durability is concerned, I recommend (and my dogs wear) brass pet id tags. They are very durable, don't rust, easy to engrave and read and look nice. If you have an active dog wearing the pet tag you will want to check the tag annually to make sure the eye isn't wearing through as they will eventually do, but most pets have their id tags last for years without any problems.

Aluminum is a fairly durable material for pet id tags. It has the advantage of coming in many pretty colors and it is somewhat lighter in weight.

Plastic tags are the least durable material and I only recommend them for less active dogs and cats. They are the lightest of the pet id tags that we offer. They come in many pretty colors and are very easy to read.

If you choose a metal id tag (either a brass tag or aluminum tag), be sure not to have another tag (e.g. rabies tag or license) on the same ring on the dog collar facing the tag information because it will scratch the pet tag make it more difficult to read. This isn't a problem for plastic pet id tags as they don't scratch like the metal ones can. Remember, 90% of the animals that end up in a shelter wearing a pet id tag return to their owner, 90% of the animals that end up in a shelter without a pet id tag don't.

Custom pet id tags can also be used as tack tags for horse stalls and tack. They make great luggage tags. We have sold them to be used to label fruit trees and rose bushes. Some younger people wear dog collars and put tags on them also! You can use a pet id tag to label anything on which you would like a permanent, durable id tag.

We have sold many custom dog id tags, unique cat id tags and pet id tags over the years. Let us put a dog tag, cat tag or pet tag on your loved pet.
